Cancun or Riviera Maya: Which One to Choose?
Cancun and Riviera Maya are two of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico. Both offer beautiful beaches, amazing resorts, and plenty of activities for visitors to enjoy. If you’re trying to decide between the two, here’s what you need to know.
Location
Cancun is located on the northeast coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, while Riviera Maya is further south, stretching from Cancun to Tulum. Cancun is closer to the airport, making it a quicker trip from the airport to your resort.
Riviera Maya, on the other hand, is more spread out and offers a quieter, more secluded experience. It’s also closer to popular attractions like Tulum’s Mayan ruins and the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve.
Beaches
Cancun’s beaches are known for their soft white sand and turquoise waters. They’re also more crowded, especially in the hotel zone. Riviera Maya’s beaches are just as beautiful, but they’re more spread out and offer a quieter experience.
One of the most popular beaches in Riviera Maya is Playa del Carmen, which offers plenty of beach clubs and restaurants along its shoreline.
Activities
Both Cancun and Riviera Maya offer plenty of activities for visitors. In Cancun, you can go snorkeling, visit the interactive aquarium, or take a day trip to Isla Mujeres.
Riviera Maya offers a more laid-back experience, with plenty of opportunities for relaxation. You can visit the Xcaret eco-archaeological park, swim in underground cenotes, or take a day trip to Cozumel.
Resorts
Both Cancun and Riviera Maya offer a wide range of resorts to choose from. Cancun’s hotels are mostly located in the hotel zone, while Riviera Maya’s resorts are more spread out.
Some of the most popular resorts in Cancun include the Hard Rock Hotel, Riu Palace Peninsula, and the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach. In Riviera Maya, you’ll find the popular Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun, Grand Velas Riviera Maya, and El Dorado Royale.
