Located in the heart of Mayfair, this charming hotel offers a luxurious and elegant setting for indulging in the ritual of afternoon tea. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at what makes the Chesterfield Mayfair afternoon tea so special, from the menu to the atmosphere to the service.

History of Afternoon Tea

Before we dive into the specifics of the Chesterfield Mayfair afternoon tea, let’s take a quick look at the history of this beloved British tradition. Afternoon tea was first introduced in the 1840s by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford. At the time, it was common for people to eat only two main meals a day, with dinner not being served until late in the evening. The Duchess found that she was often hungry in the afternoon, so she started to request a light meal of tea, sandwiches, and cakes be served in her room. This soon became a habit, and she began inviting friends to join her for afternoon tea. The practice quickly caught on among the upper classes, and it has been a staple of British culture ever since.

The Menu

One of the main draws of the Chesterfield Mayfair afternoon tea is the menu, which is both traditional and inventive. The classic selection includes finger sandwiches with fillings like smoked salmon and cream cheese, cucumber and cream cheese, and egg and cress. There are also plain and fruit scones with clotted cream and jam, as well as a variety of sweet treats like macarons, cakes, and tarts. For those with dietary restrictions, there is a gluten-free option available. The tea selection is just as impressive, with a range of black, green, and herbal teas to choose from.

The Atmosphere

Another key aspect of the Chesterfield Mayfair afternoon tea is the atmosphere. The hotel’s charming and elegant surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for indulging in this timeless tradition. The afternoon tea is served in the hotel’s elegant Conservatory, which is decorated with fresh flowers and features a live pianist playing soft music in the background. The staff are dressed in traditional attire, and the service is impeccable.
